Isolation
For my portfolio, titled Isolation, I wanted to focus on the varying degrees and types of loneliness that an individual may experience. My works symbolize how every person experiences grief differently, but similarly at the same time, shown by the identical techniques used in the photographs. However, they all feature different subjects. My works can be viewed a variety of ways, to represent a spectrum of causes of loneliness, from loss of someone close to you to problems within yourself, and also the spectrum of from painful grief to numbness. Certain pictures display a feeling of resistance, while others seem very stoic and desensitizing.
I used a variety of techniques in this portfolio, the most prevalent one being a black and white medium. This symbolizes the absence of color and vibrance in one’s life after the loss of a loved one or simply by experiencing loneliness. I also decided that a strong sense of perspective in the photos would represent the feeling well, as feeling lost, overwhelmed, and “small” is another common feeling or viewpoint, described by many people diagnosed with depressive disorders. However, despite the similar techniques and elements, subjects in each photo differ in type and emotional value. For example, the house in one of my works represents a house of a lost family member, in which memories and good emotions are associated with, even after the family member is gone. There is a presence of telephone lines and wires in each photograph as well, which is meant to symbolize the ties that a grieving person may not only have with others who feel similarly, but also their ties back to those who still love and care about them and want to help.
