Donna Missal Comes Back with a Vengeance with "Lighter"
“You can bark like a dog, baring your teeth, but I'm never going back again”
Upon first glance and first listen, Donna Missal’s newest record, “Lighter” seems to be just another pop album about breakups and heartbreak. But upon further inspection, it is indeed so much more than that. Throughout the ten song record, Missal touches on the ache of loving someone who doesn’t reciprocate the feeling, being let down by someone you care about, and having the closest person in your life, your best friend, break your heart. Diving deeper into this album, it’s obvious why Missal has garnered a much deserved following over the years.
The second track on the album, “Hurt by You,” is one of my favorites, with Missal singing about a lost love. Spreading the message that she loves the thought of her past lover, but isn’t in love with them anymore. I’m sure many listeners can relate and understand what Donna means when she sings,
“I'm in love with what we were but not with you”
Sometimes relationships end and we hold onto hope that we can repair them, but listening to Missal’s words about moving past the hope should reassure fans that everything will be fine.
On “Best Friend,” Missal sings about her best friend disappointing her and breaking her heart.
“And now I miss it, but I bet I should let it all go. Wish it was different, you were my best friend”
Sometimes the people who we are closest to and care about the most are the ones that end up hurting us the worst. Whether it’s a best friend or a partner, things don’t always turn out the way we hope that they will.
Track six, “Let You Let Me Down,” continues the angsty pop message, with Missal singing about a relationship during which she opens up to someone and they ultimately let her down and break her heart.
“And the worst part is that I let you into my heart, so you can build me up to break me. Oh the worst part is that I let you let me down”
This is something everyone can relate to at some point in their life, whether they’ve already experienced it or not. Whether it concerns a lost friendship, lost love, or betrayal of another sort, it’s too common that we let our guard down and end up hurt. But as Missal sings,
“Maybe I should thank you for the last time, that I let you let me down”
You can either take that hurt and channel it into getting better, or you can let it kill you. Obviously, Missal is an example of what happens when you don’t let it get to you--you make it to Billboard.
Donna Missal came back with a vengeance when she released “Lighter”. She wasn’t afraid to let everyone know who hurt her and what they did wrong. If you’ve ever experienced a heartbreak, a friend breakup, or anything of the sort, this album is for you. Stream it on Spotify and Apple Music now!
