A University of Southern California film student by day and an experimental producer by night, RYL0’s latest single, “Creature,” (set to release on 5/29/20) speaks to her experience as a woman of color and the process of reclaiming herself and her sexuality. Often compared to talents like FKA Twigs and Grimes, RYL0 creates all of her music single handedly and uses her background as a filmmaker to control the narrative and creative direction of her music.

The filmmaker turned producer began making remixes only a few years ago “as a bit,” creating mashups of Glass Animals tracks and reworking “Bella’s Lullaby” from The Twilight Saga. Lauryn Henry, also known as RYL0, never expected it to turn into her greatest ambition until her friends and family encouraged her to take it seriously.

Since then, she has dedicated herself to creating her own DIY world to tell her story. Her debut EP, The Death of a Loved One, introduced her as an electronic talent with a penchant for storytelling, but her latest track “Creature” shows her coming into her own. Inspired by the aesthetics of space travel and futurism, “Creature” shows RYL0 staking her claim as a woman of color, a producer, and an artist in a world that tries to keep her down.

“Creature is about the distinct experience of what it’s like to be fetishized as a woman of color, while also overthrowing the hegemonic standards of societal representations of femininity.” -RYL0
